On Saturday April 27, 2002 a ceremony was held honoring the 58 Californians who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks. After the ceremony the first of two California September 11th Memorial Groves was planted in Chico, California by surviving family members and the community. As the press release from Hollywood Beautification Team stated, "The family of Nicole Miller, one of the 58 Californians lost, initiated the arrangements with Bidwell Park after learning that HBT had committed to the project." The grove of 58 trees was planted in the Wildwood Park section of Bidwell Park, a municipal park of over 3,000 acres. Wildwood is a softball/baseball/soccer facility that borders the wilderness area of Upper Bidwell Park. Because Nicole was a softball player and an avid hiker her family thought this was the perfect location. This memorial grove and its companion grove (to be planted in the Los Angeles area this summer) will be a living memorial to all Californians lost in the September 11th attacks. A bronze plaque with all 58 names will be mounted on a boulder this summer. |
